We took a 9 overnight hour drive with a driver to Madurai, in southern Tamil Nadu. We were supposed to go by overnight train, but we didn't clear the waitlist and they kicked us off the train in Tambaram.

The housewarming event started the next night at 3:00am, with Hindu priests and a series of ceremonies, pujas, fires, guests, meals, gifts of clothing from the hosts to the guests and construction workers, and even a ceremony involving a cow and her calf receiving blessings and then taking a walk through the house.
