At the beginning of March, I took the train from Chennai to Kolkata. I traveled in "First Class/AC" which meant a space for 4 people, with bunk beds, and a locking door. My cabin-mates were an Air Force base commander and his wife. He'd been the commander of a base in the South which was decimated by the Tsunami, and they had fascinating and harrowing stories of their experiences and those of their friends.
I spent most of the journey between the train cars, taking photos out the side doors. The scenes of the people and landscape were pretty amazing: people working with their bare hands in the fields; all possible forms of transportation at the train crossings; people making use of any water source for bathing or washing clothes. Below is a sampling.
