I spent the month of March in Kolkata, teaching English by way of a TEFL certification course. I found Kolkata to be a really nice place - beautiful old buildings, taxis with working meters, sidewalks, trees, lakes. While the poverty and pollution are for real, on balance the city doesn't seem to deserve the bad reputation.
