April / Darjeeling / April 1-4 in Darjeeling

At the beginning of April, I took a spur-of-the-moment trip to Kolkata with Jill. We went by train (30 hours from Kolkata in Sleeper Class) then by jeep (3 hours which we weren't expecting) through the mountains.

I'd done no research or reading, and had no idea that Darjeeling was in the Himalayas, that it was a primary start point for Mt. Everest expeditions, or that it was one of the most prominent of the British Hill Stations. Huh - I always thought it was just a fancy tea.

We made friends with a cool woman from San Francisco, Bev, who'd been traveling on her own through Asia for 6 months, and spent a day walking all around the area with her. On the last day, Bev and I visited a tea planatation on our way to the airport.
